Diaphragmatic hernia is an uncommon cause of colic in horses; It can be congenital or acquired manifest with signs of dyspnea, lethargy and acute abdominal discomfort. History and physical examination do not allow a meaningful diagnosis. Thoracic ultrasonography or radiography if available, are the most useful procedures; however, due to its diagnostic difficulty, confirmation is usually determined in surgery or necropsy. The following case report corresponds to a mare, Colombian Creole race, 4 years of age, who shows severe signs of abdominal pain and after being treated with sedatives and anti-inflammatory without favorable response, was referred to the Clinica Equina SAS, shows results of pain from level to moderate with response to analgesia, the physiological constants are not altered, the main finding is the superior quadrant without motility and the hypomotility of lower quadrants, ultrasonography was performed finding a large number of small bowel loops inside the torax. When a diaphragmatic hernia was suspected, an exploratory laparotomy was performed, in which small bowel loops were found within the thoracic cavity for approximately 180 cm. An enteroanastomosis of the necrotic portion of the small intestine was performed and during the time of hernia reduction the patient is decompensated and after receiving resuscitation for 3 times, dies.es_CO
