| es_CO |
| dc.description.abstract | Coccidiosis and monieziosis are common intestinal parasitosis in young calves. The first is caused by Eimeria spp. and is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, causing intestinal damage, diarrhea and weight loss. Moniezia spp., on the other hand, is a cestode that requires an intermediate host (oribatid soil mites) and, although usually subclinical, can affect development in young animals. At the Paysandú Agricultural Station, a 45-day-old Jerhol calf with watery diarrhea, weight loss, shaggy fur, and apathy was reported. On physical examination, the patient presented mild dehydration, moist mucous membranes, normal temperature, and slightly elevated physiological frequencies. Suspecting intestinal parasitic infection, a stool examination was performed. Using the McMaster technique and Sheather solution flotation, oocysts of Eimeria spp. were detected, and the Dennis technique revealed a few eggs of Moniezia spp. Treatment included anticoccidials, broad-spectrum antiparasitics, fluid therapy, nutritional support, vitamins, and drugs to protect the intestinal mucosa, with favorable clinical evolution. This case demonstrates the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and the need for proper environmental management. Factors such as excessive humidity, poor calf hygiene, and the presence of birds such as pigeons can promote the spread of these parasites and should be considered in prevention and control plans. | - |
