The main objective is to carry out a review revealing relevant aspects about the generation of electrical energy and the treatment of wastewater using microbial fuel cells (MFC). Microbial fuel cells have currently stood out in the emerging technology because they have developed a solution to two latent problems such as wastewater treatment and power generation. A review of research that has been produced in the last decade is carried out and topics such as its classification, components, operating mechanisms, microbial activity and electrode materials are addressed.es_CO
