Abstract

Coping is defined as the process through which an individual cope with stressful events according to his personal resources of the individual, in this sense, according to how they are evaluated by themselves, it can be said that the moment a person Faces a situation beyond its reach, in this case the diagnosis, all the abilities and abilities of the subject are exposed to face it. Adapting to this new condition of life for both patients and their families implies a psychological effort to accept the diagnosis, procedures for clinical care, examination, consultation with an interdisciplinary team and treatment with all its side effects Which are almost always aversive. It is in the course of this process, when the psychological coping strategies that each patient adopts to face the disease are evidenced in order to reach the balance or to reduce the anxiety produced by the stressful event. In order to understand this process more deeply, a quantitative investigation was conducted to describe the coping strategies most used by a group of people who are institutionalized in the Hoasis foundation of the city of Cúcuta, North of Santander, from Of the findings it was possible to characterize the coping strategies favoring the recovery process of the patients
