| es_CO |
dc.description.abstract | Gastric dilatation volvulus syndrome (GVD) is a serious, acute condition that confers a high rate of death in small animals. Predisposing factors, affected breeds, pathophysiological events and associated injuries are currently known for this syndrome. A clinical case of gastric dilatation volvulus is presented in a 12-year-old Pitbull male canine patient, who was referred to the emergency department of the Catdog Veterinary Hospital for suspected gastric torsion volvulus. At the time of admission, the owner did not report previous illnesses. The patient was admitted in the arms of the tutor, and on physical examination the most obvious finding was a severe bilateral abdominal distension. The definitive diagnosis of gastric dilatation volvulus was determined by means of a complementary X-ray examination where it was possible to observe a compartmentalized structure with radiopacity of gas compatible with the stomach and rotated on its mesenteric axis. Given these radiographic findings, gastric decompression and percutaneous puncture were performed. After the emergency procedures, the animal was referred to the surgery area. The exploratory laparotomy made it possible to determine the definitive diagnosis of gastric dilatation volvulus syndrome based on anatomical criteria, in addition to the presence of mango seeds and remains of plastic toys at the gastric level, which is why a gastrotomy was performed. Evidence of nodular tumor-like masses in the spleen and splenic torsion associated with gastric volvulus indicated a total splenectomy as part of the surgical procedure. Despite the poor prognosis of the patient, the evolution turned out to be favorable. | es_CO |
